Farewell Woodhaven Lanes

The world works in funny ways.  Sure, there are real issues - global warming, wars, choosing the lesser of three evils in the upcoming presidential election, but that doesn’t mean other seemingly smaller issues don’t matter too, or might be just as big of a problem.  I am not a psychologists (and probably need one myself) or an expert of any kind on the plight of man kind.  I am however living and breathing and confused about the state of things.  I noticed a few years ago during a winter snow storm that I didn’t see one kid on my block outside playing in the snow.  I know when I was a kid and it snowed I was out there building snow forts, having snowball fights, sledding or one of any other numerous kid like activities.  That doesn’t seem to exist any more.  It used to be my parents (or cops) would have to drag me in from the outside world.  These days kids seem only to be interested in playing video games or text messaging on their cell phones.  The days of interacting with ones environment and neighbors seems to be over.  Sure you might might have 462 friends on MySpace or Facebook, but does that really count?  Yet another sign of the end of real life fun is visible in the closing of the Woodhaven Lanes bowling alley.  The bowling alley is closing because it can no longer afford to pay its rent, a victim of people no longer interested in activities that don’t involve a TV or shopping. It will be phased out and replaced with more retail shopping.  It is embarrassing to me that people don’t go out and do anything for fun.  Lives are based on achieving status through what material goods people possess.  Do your self a favor and shut off your Blackberry, pry your kids away from their PS3 and go out and have some real life experiences.  You have until May 18th to visit Woodhaven Lanes before they close their doors after 49 years of community service.  Do yourself a favor, go out and enjoy this treasure before you don’t know what you had until it’s gone forever.
