California Goes Gay

This morning the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage, making it the second state, behind Massachusettes to allow marriages between two people and not just a man and a woman. The ban was beaten 4 - 3 with Chief Justice Ron George stating that domestic partnerships were not a good enough of a substitute for marriage. The case was brought by San Francisco, gay and lesbian right organizations and two dozen gay and lesbian couples. In California those in domestic partnerships were eligable for all the rights and benefits of married couples, so this decision is truly one for the sake of equality.

The plan is to put a state constitutional ammendment onto the ballot during the upcoming election and probably spark many other battles in other parts of the Union over the coming months and years. Oh and don’t forget it is almost a given this decision will be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ahh, the fun of politics and marriage. Everyone should just stay single!
