Mr. Brainwash Sucks

Remember when the 1980’s were dominated by hair, glam, heavy metal? Of course you do! Deny it all you want, but I guarantee you know all the words to Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and Poison’s “Talk Dirty to Me“. Those were great times fueled by aqua net and cocaine, but it all came crashing to an end. Everything died because everyone looking to make a quick buck just produced cookie cutter copies of what came before them. Any sense of originality the bands of the decade had were destroyed by the over flow of water downed crap versions into the market. People got sick of it and turned their radios off!
That is the best metaphor I can think of to describe the state of the art world right now. Every no talent hack is out there blending the talents of those with originality who came before them into a nauseating pile of vomit mixed with puke and some throw up on top. Apparently if you put up a wheat paste poster in LA and NYC you are bad ass and brilliant these days!
The latest example of the massacre of the mind comes via “Mr. Brainwash” and his “Life is Beautiful” show. The name is fitting, because it appears that the man behind the name has had any originality of his own washed out and replaced with knock off ideas of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Andy Warhol and so many other real artists, with a touch of graffiti thrown in for “street cred”. If this show was intended to mock the current state of art it would have been great, but this is just another carbon copy artist trying to get rich off the work of others.
This is the gentrification of the art world at its worst. We all knew this was coming when Bansky can’t vandalize anything anymore without having some “Joe Schmoe” cover it with plexi glass and try to hock it on eBay. The world of street art and galleries has been blurred beyond recovery, with celebrities stocking up on anything from a “street artist” that they can get their bad art taste hands on.
What is the next big thing? Can you be the Nirvana of the the art world and put these copy cat hacks to death?
