Macclesfield Alphabet Book

The British Library is currently trying to obtain the recently surfaced, Macclesfield Alphabet Book, a mid 16th century font portfolio book. The book features examples of various font types and page decorations, believed to have been used as a consolidated sample source for prospective clients. Being so used to seeing fonts produced digitally, and always available for download with a few clicks of a mouse, it is truly amazing to see work produced by hand and probably via candle light - possibly a worse lighting source than modern day florescent - the juries still out on that one.
