Erik Burke’s Writers Bench Posters

This past Saturday morning I found myself waking up at the crack of dawn, and heading down to the Sunset Park, Bayridge and Fort Hamilton sections of Brooklyn, to take photographs for a few projects, I am currently working on. Still half drunk from the night before, I stumbled my way to the Montrose stop of the L train. After swiping my MetroCard thorugh the turnstile, I began walking towards the Manhattan bound tracks, when I did a double take. What did I see, but a SubTalk ad for the historic Writers Bench. For a moment I was outraged at the hypocrisy of the NYCTA promoting tourism to such an important piece of the graffiti culture, the same that they so vehemently seek to destroy. After wiping the crust out of my eyes and looking closer, it was apparent that this was a mock ad that some rapscallion had, without authorization, placed on the wall of my station. Upon further research the posters turned out to be the work of local artist, Erik Burke. Erik had 100 of the mock subway ads silk screened and has begun posting them in a few stations around the city. Unfortunately by the time I returned home that Saturday evening (drunk again), the poster had already been taken down. I hope other posters are able to last a little longer to bewilder and educate the public. Nice work!
