Shepard Fairey and crew are in NYC in preparation for the final exhibit that will be held at Deitch Projects. The gallery is shutting it’s doors following the exhibit as proprietor of the gallery, Jeffrey Deitch moves on to work as the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, in California. The exhibit will be running from May 1 - May 29. To coincide with the showing, the OBEY Posse installed the enormous “May Day” Mural at the corners of Houston Street and Bowery Avenue in NYC.

TrustoCorp Re-brands NYC

In the true spirit of fun and mayhem TrustoCorp. spent this past weekend installing some modified product packaging around NYC. As stated on it’s website, “TrustoCorp is a New York based artist (or artists) dedicated to highlighting the hypocrisy and hilarity of human behavior through sarcasm and satire. TrustoCorp. targets areas in the public domain typically reserved for messages of trust and authority and abuses them with visual messages of mayhem and absurdity hijacked from the visual style of our authorities.” Next time you go to the market, be sure to keep an eye out for these life changing products!

Given that your chances of running into one of these products around NYC is going to be fairly difficult, might I suggest you check out the TrustoCorp. exhibit opening on April 15 at Brooklyn Brothers Gallery. The gallery is located at 18 East 17 Street, 6th Floor.

Steve Powers - “A Love Letter For You”

In 1984 Steve Powers started climbing rooftops in his neighborhood and painting his alias ESPO as a dues paying member of the ICY graffiti club. 25 years later he returned home to Philadelphia in the summer of 2009 to write a love letter across the same rooftops facing the Market-Frankford line. The letter, meant for one, with meaning for all, encompasses 50 walls on a 20 block stretch of market street. Drawing input, inspiration, and work from the community Powers created a letter to and from west Philly. This unprecedented public art project was a collaboration of Powers, The Mural Arts Program, and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage. It required 1200 cans of spray paint, 800 gallons of bucket paint, and the skilled hands of 20 of the finest spray painters in America, who Powers put into the legendary ICY club.

“A Love Letter For You - Brick Valentines On The Philly Skyline” documents the art and the neighborhood that inspired this ambitious public art project.

A collection of new works by Shepard Fairey will be on display from May 1 through May 29 at the 18 Wooster Deitch Gallery location. In addition to the exhibit, dubbed May Day, Fairey and the Obey Posse are looking for wall space to bless with mural installations to coincide with the show. Beyond the new works by the famed street & studio artist, the show also will mark the last exhibit to be held at Deitch. Owner, Jeffrey Deitch has been appointed to a position as director of the LA Museum of Contemporary Art, thus he will be leaving us here on the East Coast to take residence in the City of Angels. While this a a huge opportunity for Mr. Deitch and I wish him all the success in the world, I will sincerely miss having such an amazing venue here in NYC to have the opportunity to witness the immense amount of talent that has been on exhibit via Deitch over the last decade.
