Current TV: Martha Cooper

This is a great video from Current TV on Marth Cooper and her involvement in the early stages of hip hop and graffiti.

Man Climbs The NY Times Building…Again

www.asdlabs.com - AS|D LABS - INTERACTIVE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT - USER INTERFACE DESIGN - CUSTOM APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT - SoHo NYC - 212-866-4402 - ASD LABS - ASDLABS- AS|DLABS - David Malone Arrest NYPD NY Times Building Climber

This is getting to be old news now, but I suppose it makes sense that if you want to pull some spidey activist political propaganda spiel on the masses you would use a building like the NY Times midtown skyscraper to do it. Not just because building is a ladder just daring you to scale it, but because it’s bringing the fight right to the media. It’s like a guerilla press conference.

Even though it makes sense it is kind of ridiculous that 3 people have now climbed the building in a little over a month. Isn’t there another building worth climbing? Just because this one is easy, doesn’t make it the only building out there. What about the poor Daily News and Post, they have to be feeling left out of all the fun.

After the French Spiderman and his copycat climber, the latest gymnast is author David Malone. Climbing only about 5 stories up Malone slapped posters and unfurled a banner promoting his new book “Bin Ladens Plan” showing Bin Laden controlling a marionette style Bush. The best part of the story is that it was reported Malone was using his cell phone while climbing. Seriously man, the text message can wait!

Read the NY Times article after the jump.

Are You A Douchebag?

Like the “I’m too cool to like what is cool” nerds who try to tell you there are 357 genres of indie rock, there is now a handbook to help you understand the many subtle varieties of douchebaggery. The aptly titled “Hot Chicks with Douchebags” is clearly written from the perspective of a wannabe fake tanned Jersey boy who can’t get with any of the chicks on the shore. I know this because the book fails to point out that the women surrounding the douches are them too douches. This will make the perfect book for the dude-douche who can’t seem to land that perfect douche-ette. God help us all!

Check out some great excerpts of the book available on Radar or buy your copy on Amazon.

Damn just writing this gave me that not so fresh feeling. Good thing there is Massengill!

Spread Leg Advertising

aframe.jpg

When I think of spread legs, two things come to mind; the first, I don’t think I need to mention, and the second involves me and cops during a “routine stop”. However, Print Magazine has added to my thought options by writing a great article on spread legs in advertising. The article includes numerous images of the classic “A-Frame”, a cutoff-torso-spread-leg framing device, and claims it to be the most copied design theme ever used. Thinking back to all the National Lampoon movie covers, they just might be right.

Obey x Penguin x George Orwell

obeyxpenguin.jpg

What better way to follow up on a post regarding CCTV than with a post on George Orwell’s classics 1984 and Animal Farm? Damn right, there isn’t a better way (thanks for agreeing with me)!

The great Shepard Fairey, you know that OBEY guy, has lent his talents to Penguin books to redesign covers for the latest releases of 1984 and Animal Farm…and they are freakin’ radical man! If you have never read these books, or haven’t read them for a long time I would suggest you pick up a copy of both and check out these still culturally relevant and brilliant pieces of timeless literature. Then after you read them you can reconsider or confirm your thoughts on CCTV and other political and cultural issues. I mean, unless you would prefer to watch reruns of Rock of Love II on VH1.

50 Years of LEGO…The Book

legocollectorsguide.jpg

Growing up I don’t believe there was a child in any country (where available, so don’t get all snobby and tell me about your LEGO-less childhood in Tuvalu) that didn’t play with LEGO’s. While from time to time all kids go through a fling with some other false idols, for me it was G.I. Joe and He Man, the simple brilliance of those little blocks is where you always return. LEGO’s have captured the imagination and provided an outlet for children every where to create what their heart desired. After all, you don’t stick around for 50 years if your product is a mere fad. In recognition of the LEGO brick turning 50 this year, LEGO is publishing a “Collectors Guide” documenting all of their nearly 8,000 sets produced between 1958 and 2008. Pick up your copy when it becomes available later this year and take a stroll down the LEGO brick road.
