40 Years In The Future

 31.jpg

How often do you find yourself wondering what life will be like in a far of year like 2048? Movies of recent years always depict a time of robots, flying cars, force fields and super computers, not much different of what people thought today would be like in 1968. It is always funny to read these articles or see movies from years ago where they expected today to be much like we imagine 40 years from now will be.

The car accelerates to 150 mph in the city’s suburbs, then hits 250 mph in less built-up areas, gliding over the smooth plastic road. You whizz past a string of cities, many of them covered by the new domes that keep them evenly climatized year round. Traffic is heavy, typically, but there’s no need to worry. The traffic computer, which feeds and receives signals to and from all cars in transit between cities, keeps vehicles at least 50 yds. apart. There hasn’t been an accident since the system was inaugurated. Suddenly your TV phone buzzes. A business associate wants a sketch of a new kind of impeller your firm is putting out for sports boats. You reach for your attache case and draw the diagram with a pencil-thin infrared flashlight on what looks like a TV screen lining the back of the case. The diagram is relayed to a similar screen in your associate’s office, 200 mi. away. He jabs a button and a fixed copy of the sketch rolls out of the device. He wishes you good luck at the coming meeting and signs off.

(Good thing the full article is written about November, 2008. Pheww, we have 7 months to make all this happen! Let’s get to work people!)

NY International Auto Show

autosow.jpg

Yesterday marked the first day of Spring, yet for some reason my apartment was colder than it has been all year when I was awakened by the irritating chirp of my alarm clock. Besides my drafty windows and not being a morning person, I am excited! The reason for my enthusiasm is beyond the upcoming warmer weather, but the opening of the NY International Auto Show. That’s right, all the Porsche’s, Ferrari’s and Volkswagen’s (YES, I group VW with Porsche and Ferrari) of my dreams will be under one roof. Whether you love exotics, trucks, econo-boxes, green or luxury cars, there is sure to be something at the show for everyone (unless of course you hate cars and anything to do with them).

Blu Ray Kills HD DVD

hddvdrip.jpg

The format wars are over. Sony’s Blu Ray has taken the championship belt. After Warner bailed out on HD DVD and both Best Buy and Netflix decided to stop stocking the technology, Toshiba’s favored format was left gasping for air. Finally retail giant Wal-Mart came in and put the final nail in the coffin by announcing it will also no longer stock HD DVD technology. Rest in Peace HD DVD and say hi to Betamax for me!
